New 10 week Off Piste course in Val d’Isere

Our new 10 week all terrain & off piste course  in Val d’Isere has launched this week. It is an ideal way for strong skiers & snowboarders to spend a career break or gap year as an alternative to doing a instructor course. Rather than sitting instructor exams, you course focuses on high performance freeride technique, off piste skills and avalanche safety training.

Based in Val d’Isere, one of Europe’s top resorts, we access Espace Killy’s phenomenal terrain. With 10,000 hectares to explore, no one is going to get bored!! Instruction is provided by Level 4 BASI instructors with the European Mountain Security Qualification and Mountain Guides.

Last day of the season at Whistler

Whistler Blackcomb’s ski season end today with Blackcomb closing its lifts at the end of today. The season brought almost 50ft of snow and there is still a snowbase of over 2 metres. Pretty incredible.

The glacier will open again for skiing in a month or so. Sadly, Alltracks will not be out there this summer, but we’re already gearing up for another winter with our first course beginning in November for the 2010/11 season.

Contact one of the team on +44 (0)1794 388 034 if you need any info.

Enjoy the summer!

Edinburgh Uni Ski & Snowboard Club News

During semester 2, EUSSC took part in many Scottish and British competitions and saw excellent performances from our team!

We kicked off with the Scottish round of the British University Indoor Snowsport Competitions (BUISC) in Glasgow which saw our race slalom team qualifying for the finals, as well as 4 individual male skiers. Two female and two male board racers also qualified. Special congratulations to Sam Filsell who not only beat the girls but also all of the board racers! On the freestyle front, Charlotte Clark from Edinburgh gained first place, as well as Humphrey Aitkinson gaining second for the boys. The event was finished off in the bar with EUSSC, as usual, being the last ones standing!

A few weeks later we travelled down to Castleford for the Finals with all the other British Unis. It was an awesome day of competitions and although none of our members reached podium position, the teams gave great performances! We also went to support three of our committee members, plus three snow-lovers from other unis, in their “SWEET BID” conquest to run BUSC for the year 2011-12!

Other events included Granite City Invitational; an evening of competitions, slopeside DJS, free beer and a tasty BBQ at Aberdeen dryslope organised by ABDN SNOW. Once again we saw great performances from our teams, topped off with the ski team duals which saw our team reach the final. Unfortunately we were beaten by our rivals Glasgow, but we’ve got an increasing hunger to beat them next year! We then headed into town to enjoy the highlights of the Aberdeen nightlife!

Overall, this has been a successful semester for our race and freestyle teams both on and off the slopes! We hope to increase training levels to regain our place on the BUSC podium next year!

Edinburgh Uni report from BUSC Champs

The British University Snow Sports Championships (BUSC), the highlight of the snowsports calendar, took place on 27th March- 3rd April this year and did not disappoint! Once again 2500 students took over the resort of Alp D’Huez for a fully packed week of competitions and partying. The weather was variable with a few days with poor visibility and some snowing, however it was worth it leaving the last two days with glorious sun and powder. Due to this, a few of the competitions were rearranged, but when they took place the air was filled with team spirit!

Edinburgh took out 209 students to the event, the 3rd biggest in the UK, which meant we had a great presence in the resort, both on the slope and in the bars! The Edinburgh race and freestyle teams proved highly successful with James Filsell picking up the prize for first and second place in the mens Super Giant slalom and skier cross respectively. Sam Filsell ranked first and second on the podium for snowboarding in parallel and giant slalom. As for the freestyle, Charlotte Clarke took 1st place for the female ski halfpipe as well as 3rd place in Big Air. Omar Bakhaty also achieved 3rd place in male Big Air. Gig Kingsford, who organises the Edinburgh contingency of BUSC, won a BUSC “OBE”, as well as the overall award for “Excellence and dedication to the Championships” so massive congratulations to him for all his efforts!

The BUSC team put on 3 epic nights including the opening ceremony, competitors Ball and Final night party, all of which had maximum attendance and where great nights, creating one of the most successful BUSC events of all time!

Alltracks has been delighted to sponsor Edinburgh Uni over the last season and if you are on a gap year or career break, or looking to kick start a career in snowsports, check out the ALLTRACKS site ski instructor courses and snowboard instructor courses

Endless Winter in Whistler – Canada’s Snowiest resort

The season is still rolling out in Whistler at a time when most resorts have shut up shop. So far this season Whistler has received over 47 feet of snow making it one of the snowiest years ever for any resort in Canada. The conditions are looking great for the annual Telus freestyle and culture festival later on this month and of course for the ALLTRACKS guys currently on the 3 and 4 week instructor and improvement courses. Spearhead Traverse – Ski Tour

A few weeks ago, whilst out in Whistler, myself and IFMGA Guide, Klemen Mali, completed an excellent ski tour, doing the Spearhead Traverse in the backcountry of Whistler Blackcomb. Klemen had taken one of the overnight trips for the guys on the ALLTRACKS snowboard course earlier in the season and knows the Whistler backcountry very well. Like a mini Haute Route, the Spearhead traverse takes you over numerous glaciers from the back of Blackcomb round to Whistler.

There are various ways to complete the Spearhead with some people choosing to spread the trip over 4 days in order to take in all the summits at a leisurely pace and others opting to go fast and light and completing it in a day. We decided to prepare for a night out but with the right weather we made it round fairly quickly and stopped just short of Whistler at the Russet Lake hut.

Leaving the resort boundary at Blackcomb Glacier, we headed up to the East Col before dropping down to Circle Glacier on some fairly dodgy, wind affected snow – not the best start for the bottomless powder we were looking for. From there, we traversed onto the shoulder of Decker mountain and on to the beautiful Trorey Glacier – a huge, untouched canvas of snow. Once you are out here, you really appreciate the scale of the Coast Mountains of British Columbia and with only a few other people, we really enjoyed the solitude of the space. Once on the Trorey, we passed round the south of Mt Pattison, following the route i had completed earlier on in the season. But rather than hitting the steep North West face of Pattison, we had to continue on.

From here, we faced the most arduous ascent of the trip with a pretty steep climb up the Tremor Glacier to the col between Mt Tremor and Mt Shudder. At this point it was about 1pm and it was feeling damn hot. My forehead is still feeling the burn! However, the pain was soon forgotten when we were enjoying our lunch in the sun at the top. After that, there is a steady traverse and a mellow climb past Mt MacBeth and onto the Lago Glacier., where we enjoyed some good skiing.

Our final section of the day was the traverse across the mighty Overlord Glacier where there were two ominous cornices above us – so despite feeling pretty knackered we forced ourselves on, and up to the col between Whirlwind and Fissile and down to the Russet Lake Hut where we arrived at about 5pm.

It was cool to get to the hut and finally sit down and chill out. There were two other parties there that had been lapping Fissile and Whirlwind over the last few days. With a delicious freeze dried dinner in our bellies (Katmandu Curry????), we went to sleep happy and suitably full.

The sun from Saturday had most definitely disappeared and we all felt the wind bringing another storm in through the night. As always, in a communal hut, we woke early and enjoyed another delicious backcountry treat of oatmeal (YUM).

We headed up onto Cowboy Ridge (a great ski area close to the Whistler boundary) and enjoyed some of the best turns of the trip which we enjoyed with our fresh legs, before following the singing pass trail into Whistler Village.

Alltracks Sponsored Athlete – Max Hardy’s report from Chamonix

What an exciting year 2010 is going to be for ski cross. Next month, leading athletes from around the world will descend upon the Canadian city of Vancouver with one thing on their minds – gold. And for many of the hardened veterans taking part in the first-ever Olympic ski cross event, like the USA’s Daron Rahlves and the Czech Republic’s Tomas Kraus, aching limbs and creaking knees will be brushed aside for one last shot at sporting immortality. But not if Switzerland’s Michael Schmidt has anything to say about it – the 24-year-old has exploded from relative anonymity in the races leading up to the Games, and now sits atop the leaderboard in the FIS World Cup standings going into next month’s race. It’s going to be an exciting one for sure, and I’m sure you’ll all be glued to your TV screens (as I will!).

GBR’s Ed Cozzi battles it out in qualification at the FIS Ski

Cross World Cup at Sankt Johann in Tirol, Austria Meanwhile, slightly further down the world ranking ladder, things have

been hectic. Off-season training went very well, and I’m hugely indebted to the University of York Annual Fund and York Sport for their support for this season – between them they’ve provided gym facilities whilst I was in Yorkshire from October to December, and some much-needed financial assistance to help fund my racing. I’ve also taken on a role within Snowsport GB (the national governing body of British skiing and snowboarding) as the Media and Public Relations Officer for British Ski Cross (www.gbskicross.co.uk), and it’s been great to get stuck in at the administrative level of the sport to try and develop the support our athletes receive. We held a hugely successful fundraiser evening at London Oxford Airport in October in partnership with tour operator Erna Low (www.ernalow.co.uk), raising some £500 for the team on the night, which has been a great help in eating into the accommodation costs of the British World Cup Team.

Max and British Ski Cross Commercial Officer Ben Corbey at the London Oxford Airport fundraiser evening.

In mid-December, after tying degree matters up in York, I headed out to Val D’Isere to spend a week with my family and to adjust to my setup for the season. I’m running the same Rossignol skis as last year, but I’ve made some changes to my boots with the help of James Choularton at Outdoor Traders in Abbingdon (www.outdoortradersuk.com) and it needed some getting used to! The skiing was great in Val and I got a chance to play around on my new freeride skis – Rossignol S5’s – which are a great ride, even on the groomers, which is an uncommon characteristic for a wider ski built with powder in mind.

With some of the cobwebs blown away, Boxing Day meant it was then time to head to Les Houches, a small (but perfectly formed) ski hill near Chamonix to report for duty at the British Ski Academy (www.britskiacad.org.uk) where I’m now based for most of the season. The logic behind working at the Academy this year is to improve the technical elements of my skiing, namely through training endless Giant Slalom gates, in the hope that I can transfer these skills back into ski cross at the end of the season and beyond. It’s going well so far, and now that January is in full flow we’re settling into the hard work which is great. From here on out, it’s all elbow grease and hard graft – I’ve got a lot to learn! I’ll check back in soon and let you all know how it goes, Max.

p.s. Awesome powder day on 31st December to see out 2009. Check out this shot of coach Luke Hadley dropping a nice little cliff. There were some great pillow lines that day, too…

Check out The Times article on the ALLTRACKS 4 week ski & snowboard course in Whistler by Toby Symington.

The Times – Alltracks 4 week ski & snowboard course

Toby hit Whistler during the biggest November on record – over 6 metres of snow fell so the conditions were great for his arrival. He spent 4 weeks with Alltracks, gaining his CSIA Level 1, Canadian Avalanche Association AST 1 and enjoyed the fantastic conditions at North America’s biggest resort.
