Edinburgh Uni report from BUSC Champs

The British University Snow Sports Championships (BUSC), the highlight of the snowsports calendar, took place on 27th March- 3rd April this year and did not disappoint! Once again 2500 students took over the resort of Alp D’Huez for a fully packed week of competitions and partying. The weather was variable with a few days with poor visibility and some snowing, however it was worth it leaving the last two days with glorious sun and powder. Due to this, a few of the competitions were rearranged, but when they took place the air was filled with team spirit!

Edinburgh took out 209 students to the event, the 3rd biggest in the UK, which meant we had a great presence in the resort, both on the slope and in the bars! The Edinburgh race and freestyle teams proved highly successful with James Filsell picking up the prize for first and second place in the mens Super Giant slalom and skier cross respectively. Sam Filsell ranked first and second on the podium for snowboarding in parallel and giant slalom. As for the freestyle, Charlotte Clarke took 1st place for the female ski halfpipe as well as 3rd place in Big Air. Omar Bakhaty also achieved 3rd place in male Big Air. Gig Kingsford, who organises the Edinburgh contingency of BUSC, won a BUSC “OBE”, as well as the overall award for “Excellence and dedication to the Championships” so massive congratulations to him for all his efforts!

The BUSC team put on 3 epic nights including the opening ceremony, competitors Ball and Final night party, all of which had maximum attendance and where great nights, creating one of the most successful BUSC events of all time!

Alltracks has been delighted to sponsor Edinburgh Uni over the last season and if you are on a gap year or career break, or looking to kick start a career in snowsports, check out the ALLTRACKS site ski instructor courses and snowboard instructor courses

Endless Winter in Whistler – Canada’s Snowiest resort

The season is still rolling out in Whistler at a time when most resorts have shut up shop. So far this season Whistler has received over 47 feet of snow making it one of the snowiest years ever for any resort in Canada. The conditions are looking great for the annual Telus freestyle and culture festival later on this month and of course for the ALLTRACKS guys currently on the 3 and 4 week instructor and improvement courses. Whistler – Snowiest November on record

Whistler has now received over 418cm this month, making it the snowiest November on record. It just keeps coming!

“This is an unprecedented start to the season,” says Anton Horvath, Whistler Mountain weather forecaster. “The excitement of locals and guests alike is palpable, and the timing of this record breaking event happening this year as we prepare to be a host venue for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, is just icing on the cake. Whistler Blackcomb is well known for the copious amount of snow it receives on an annual basis. The fact that we’re only 87cm (34 inches) from reaching the half way point of our annual average snowfall, shows how incredible the start of this season really is.” The annual average snowfall at Whistler Blackcomb is just over 10 metres or 33 feet

The first Alltracks course of the season starts on the 25th and the skiers and snowboarders on that course are definitely in for some powder.

Whistler to open 2 weeks early!

It’s DUMPING. Whistler is going to open this Saturday (14th November) due to the great snow that has fallen over the last couple of weeks. 70cm of the good stuff has fallen in the last 7 days and another 65cm are due to fall before Saturday.

The early signs for the season are great and we’re obviously hoping for another prime Whistler season in the Coast Mountains of Canada.

The Alltracks 4 week ski & snowboard instructor  course begins on the 25th and it looks like they are in for a perfect start. The guys arriving a few days early will even be able to sneak a few early turns in.

It’s Snowing in Whistler – Yee Ya!

Last night, Whistler got it’s first proper snowfall of the season. It’s time to get excited. Keep up to date with the snow as it arrives by signing up to Whistler Blackcomb’s snow report.

With the 4 week ski & snowboard instructor courses starting in under two months time, we’re stoked to see the snow so early! Let’s hope it keeps coming and we get a solid base down through October and November.

Thankfully, the ski and snowboard industry seems to recognise all the hard work that the resort puts in, and every year WB seems to walk away with more and more accolades.

New Revelstoke Outdoor Centre

Dan Sculnick, the director of the RMR ski & snowboard school has just sent us the updates from Revelstoke and the exciting news of the new Revelstoke Outdoor Centre:

“The Revelstoke Outdoors Centre (ROC) is like nothing else out there.  It is a centre for education, awareness and performance with adventure as the core around which programs and partnerships are designed.  There are five main components to ROC.  These components are Snow School, Cat Skiing, Backcountry/Slackcountry Touring, Avalanche Awareness Courses and Third Party activities.  What makes the Revelstoke Outdoors Centre unique is that no other resort can claim to have domain of all of this under one umbrella and no other resort can operate all of these services at the same location.  Located at Revelstoke Mountain Resort ROC has the benefits of a huge mountain and great access to Mechanized Skiing/Boarding and Backcountry terrain.  Guests will have the ability to choose from a flexible program offering with something for everyone.” Dan Sculnick

This highlights Revelstoke’s commitment to offering a true all mountain ski & snowboard experience and we can’t wait to get back out there to enjoy it.
