Whistler 2008: Week 3 of 4 Week Instructor Course

Snowboard CASI Level 1 Prep & Backcountry Snowboarding

By Week 3, the snowboarding was going really well. Our group had been working hard on technique and teaching practice and found a good balance between work and play. However, the unusual drop in temperature took us all by surprise as Whistler normally has a fairly temperate climate and -20 days are a rarity. Thermals & neck gaiters are purchased swiftly.

Despite the arctic temperatures, spirits remained high/ Lots of hot chocolates were consumed and there may have been the odd rum in them too. The chalet hot tub was greatly appreciated and the ideal place to relax following a day on the hill.

The overnight backcountry tour was scheduled for the weekend and we were all greatly looking forrward to it, to build on the skills learnt on the Avalanche course the previous weekend. Following a decision from Brian, our lead guide, it was decided that sleeping in a snowcave in the current temperatures would not be particularly pleasent and we could save that experience for another day. We still spend two good days out in the Whistler backcountry where we enjoyed a few good powder turns and enhanced our Avalanche safety and general backcountry knowledge. The best comment of the weekend being ‘bloody freezing, not sure I can feel my fingers but what an awesome day!’
